This book confounds me.

DesperationThe cover is so appalling – look right – that I had doubts about putting it on our site lest you think we have no taste. But the story itself is well edited. It’s an incongruity that follows through into the text.

Desperation starts with such a degree of kink that it can only really appeal to people with certain tastes, yet the author largely restrains himself thereafter and focuses on telling a story about child abuse, love, celebrity, blackmail, and murder. And does so reasonably well. But here’s the thing.

If you like to read about girls who like to dress up as schoolboys and get caned by old men who come in their pants halfway through, then this might be the book for you. Especially if you like girls who are up for a spot of anal, and enjoy the idea that two such with similar tastes might end up together and take turns spanking each other.

However, if that is what floats your boat, then you may still be disappointed because there’s not a lot of your favorite stuff in here. Yes, there’s enough to put many other people off. But not enough for the readers it might turn on. I’m not sure how you fix that, but I think you need to commit.
